policies

Publishes details of all of the organisations it invests in here. Its investment policy is to invest in organisations working to benefit people and the planet across three different ‘sectors,’ environment, culture and society. See Minimum Standards, Business Principles

The key environmental and social criteria in Triodos Bank’s minimum standards are focused on promoting sustainability, human dignity, and positive impact while avoiding harm. They are grouped primarily into two major categories: planet awareness (environmental criteria) and human dignity (social criteria).

Environmental Criteria (Planet Awareness):

  • Animal Welfare: Prohibitions on financing companies involved in animal testing, factory farming without strong animal welfare policies, and activities causing animal suffering.
  • Biodiversity & Natural Resources: Standards against involvement in trade of endangered species, deforestation, and contamination of natural resources such as water.
  • Energy & Pollution: Support for renewable energy; exclusions for fossil fuels and activities causing severe pollution and hazardous contamination.
  • Sustainable Fisheries: Criteria to avoid unsustainable fishing and aquaculture practices.
  • Genetic Engineering: Restrictions or scrutiny on the use of genetic engineering in products.
  • Waste & Hazardous Substances: Avoidance of financing companies contributing to hazardous waste or environmental contamination.

Social Criteria (Human Dignity):

  • Health and Safety: Exclusion of companies involved in alcohol, cannabis, gambling, tobacco, and weapons production due to their negative social and health impacts.
  • Human Rights and Labour Standards: Minimum standards ensuring respect for human rights, prohibition of child and forced labor, adherence to labour laws including fair wages and working hours.
  • Conflict Minerals: Restrictions on financing companies involved in sourcing conflict minerals.
  • Industry and Content Restrictions: Exclusions related to pornography, sex industry, and other sectors violating human dignity.
  • Wellbeing and Inclusion: Commitment to social well-being, societal equity, diversity, and inclusion, aiming to improve quality of life and tackle inequality across business decisions.

Triodos applies these criteria rigorously to ensure that all clients, investments, and projects it finances align with sustainable development goals and uphold the bank’s mission of creating positive social and environmental impact, avoiding negative externalities in its activities.

controversies

In 2017 Corporate Watch linked Triodos to fundraising for a UK programme encouraging rough sleepers who were non-UK nationals to return home. No major ongoing allegations or corruption issues found since.
